The number one reason our clients first see us. When dealing with pain conditions it is important to determine and address the root cause and contributing factors leading to the painful experience instead of just treating symptoms. We consider the whole of a person, body, mind, and spirit when addressing pain issues. Our focus on intake, assessment, intentionally targeted bodywork and neuromuscular re-education help set you up for success in overcoming your pain.
Are you moving as well as you’d like to?
Many things can influence movement quality. Our clinical manual therapy can be targeted toward improving movement through soft tissue manipulation and movement re-education. This method can help re-establish muscle length, stretch, and engagement to make movements more coordinated, fluid, and improve range.
Clinical manual therapy can be beneficial as a rehab strategy. We highly recommend it for post-surgical recovery or injuries in the healing process after initial physical therapy. Manual therapies can be helpful in recovering appropriate sensory awareness to affected areas and incorporating movement will further improve that awareness.
Preventative care and maintenance routines are beneficial if your work or activities involve repetitive movements or prolonged sitting or standing. Repetitive movements or lack of movement can result in compensatory patterns and locked postures that could affect your movement, joints, and muscle health down the road. Strategic self care habits can help you sustain, and even improve, your health for longevity.
Clinical manual therapy involves working with specific ailments or movement issues and providing informed, specific, hands-on treatments and movement therapy to work toward improving your condition and helping you reach your goals.
Our assessments for clinical work involve an intake where we look at your health history, hobbies, activities, physical demands, and work/life balance to build our base for any tests. These tests can be movements you're having difficulty with, strength tests, flexibility checks, or to just get an idea of your overall movement quality. We prioritize re-testing throughout clinical sessions to determine we’re on the right track with our work.
Dynamic application of bodywork allows for more precision and functional focus. We use position specific bodywork and active engagement techniques to address movement limitations and symptomatic issues. This type of work allows for more targeted results because we are focusing on specific positions and movements you are having issues with or are more likely to be in during your daily activity. This means you may be on a treatment table, seated, standing or in motion while work is performed. Working this way also allows us to assess in real time what manual therapies work well for your specific issue.
After we free up restrictions, address tender areas and decrease tension and stiffness it’s time to move. Movement re-education helps to re-establish appropriate muscle length and function once the body is optimally prepared for it. We focus on activation, coordination, speed, and endurance to ensure your body is adapting well to the changes from manual therapy and to address and correct any compensatory patterns that could have contributed to your initial issue.
Knowledge is power. The more you know about your body, the more you‘re able to improve your quality of life. Practical education can help you improve your movement quality, reduce your risk of injury, and re-frame and reduce the intensity and frequency of pain. Gaining this knowledge helps you recognize and understand the unique signals your body is giving you and why. Most importantly, it helps you feel confident in taking action with helpful interventions on your own or provided by a trusted professional.
Myofascial Therapy focuses on addressing myofascial (muscular & fascial) pain and dysfunction. This modality focuses on addressing soft tissue stiffness and increasing movement in the skin, superficial, and deep fascial layers. This modality incorporates hands-on techniques as well as tool based techniques to mobilize tissues and is primarily done “dry” or with little medium
Pin & Stretch is an active engagement myofascial technique involving localized pinning of a muscle and overlying tissues while actively moving through stretch and contraction of the muscle. This technique allows the muscle to shorten and lengthen in all available movements while targeting a specific area. This technique can feel very intense to some, but also very relieving.
Clinical Deep Tissue Massage — a modality not a pressure level. This modality focuses on accessing and addressing soft tissue issues in layers. This is done slowly with superficial pressure and examination to start and progresses to deeper layer access through sustained pressure. This can create the sensation of a "melt" effect in some. This modality is primarily used to address myofascial dysfunction and muscular imbalance.
Trigger Point Therapy aims to address myofascial pain and dysfunction through the use of identifying and applying pressure to hypersensitive nodules in soft tissue. These nodules often referred to as "knots" can present with local hypersensitivity and discomfort or generate a referred "pain pattern" away from the nodule itself. Referral patterns can often mimic other pathologies and therefore pain from these ”knots” can be mistaken for neuropathy, strains, or other ailments.
Assisted Stretching can be beneficial for muscle length, strength and motor learning. We use active and passive stretching as well as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretch techniques. Stretching targeted muscles not only helps with encouraging muscle lengthening, it also engages the nervous system building better awareness of the body and how it can, and should, be able to move.
Sports Massage involves techniques and movements based on your sport or athletic needs. This modality is based more on intent than specific techniques and can vary depending on where you’re at in your training schedule. Bodywork the day before an event will look different than off-season. This type of work can also be done on-site for pre-event prep, mid-event maintenance, and post-event recovery.
Instrumented Soft Tissue Mobilization (ISTM) focuses on addressing myofascial dysfunction through the use of tools. ISTM can be used to address soft tissues including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. It is also one of our favorite ways to mobilize scar tissue for better movement.
Cupping Therapy provides a decompression stimulus to the tissues allowing for lift and creating space between the superficial layers of tissue. Often thought of as "reverse massage" it can be more relieving to some than traditional compressive techniques. We use both stationary and moving cupping.
Kinesiotaping provides ongoing stimulus you can wear home. During sessions we may discover stretching the skin in certain directions provides substantial relief from pain and helps improve movement. We can then use the tape to mimic the hands-on stimulus. Longer exposure to a proven positive stimulus can allow for continuous improvement in movement and pain alleviation.
